Prepare a Windows 11 installation USB as a recovery fallback

If a PC will not enter its built-in recovery environment, external Windows installation media can provide a route to repair tools or reinstall Windows. The risky part is confusing Repair your computer with Install Windows and confirming a disk wipe while trying to save files. Prepare the media on another trusted PC, verify where it came from, and rehearse reaching the repair menu without executing destructive steps. This also helps when the original disk has to be replaced.

Before you start

Back up accessible files first and locate the BitLocker recovery key. Use an empty USB drive with the capacity specified by Microsoft's current media-creation tool; its contents will be erased. Record the broken PC's Windows edition, language, architecture and model if known. For manufacturer-specific drivers, compare the OEM recovery media option as well. Do not obtain a modified ISO from a forum post or download ad.

Do it step by step

  1. On a working PC, go directly to Microsoft's Windows software-download site and use its current Windows 11 installation media tool. Check the published system requirements and the tool's USB size requirement before selecting the drive.
  2. Choose the desired language and edition, select the exact empty USB and let the official tool finish. Preserve its completion message. Do not copy an ISO file onto a normal USB and assume that alone makes it bootable.
  3. Use the broken PC manufacturer's one-time boot menu to select the USB. Note the key from its official manual. If firmware does not list the media, verify the USB port and boot mode before changing security settings.
  4. At the Windows setup screen, choose Repair your computer to enter the recovery tools. Inspect Startup Repair, Uninstall updates or System Restore as appropriate. Do not select Install Windows merely to see what happens.
  5. If you later choose an in-place reinstall while Windows still starts, launch the matching setup from within Windows and read what files and apps the installer says it will keep. If Windows cannot start and you boot from USB for a clean install, assume the selected installation may erase files, apps and settings.
  6. Once repair or reinstall is finished, verify activation, drivers, updates and restored files. Keep a separate file backup and recovery key; the USB only supplies Windows setup and tools.

Check the result

The official USB boots to setup, and you can reach Repair your computer without beginning installation. You know the data consequences of any later reinstall choice.

If something goes wrong

If the tool cannot write the drive, try a reliable USB and check space and network access on the creation PC. If setup asks for a BitLocker key, use your saved key rather than wiping a locked drive in frustration. If the PC's SSD is missing even in firmware, installation media cannot make a failing device reliable.

Know the limit

Microsoft installation media and a recovery drive are different. A booted clean installation can remove data; what an in-place setup can keep depends on how it is launched and the choices displayed. Never promise that every USB reinstall preserves applications. Microsoft reinstall with media Windows recovery options
