Prepare before enabling Advanced Data Protection for iCloud

Advanced Data Protection extends end-to-end encryption to more iCloud categories, including backups and photos. It protects against certain cloud-side exposures, but Apple cannot recover that protected data for you if you lose every trusted device and recovery method.

Before you start​

Check whether the feature is available in your region and that your devices meet Apple's current requirements. Make an independent backup of irreplaceable data and verify you can open a sample from it.

Do it step by step​

1. Review your Apple Account device list and update devices that will remain signed in. Remove old devices you no longer control, following Apple's account process.
2. Set up an account recovery contact or recovery key. If you choose a key, store it in a protected location outside the devices and cloud account it may need to recover.
3. Discuss the trade-off with anyone who shares iCloud data or relies on a particular web-access workflow. Do not enable the feature during an urgent device replacement without the recovery method ready.
4. On iPhone open Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection, then follow Turn On Advanced Data Protection and any recovery setup prompts.
5. After setup, verify the feature's state and test normal access from your trusted devices. Confirm the independent backup and recovery-contact route remain usable.

Check the result​

The iCloud setting should show enabled, normal files should open on trusted devices and you should know where the recovery route is documented.

If something goes wrong​

If setup is blocked by an outdated device or missing recovery method, resolve that exact issue first. Do not abandon a device holding unique files until migration is confirmed.

Know the limit​

End-to-end encryption is not a backup and does not prevent accidental deletion or phishing. Apple's documentation says it cannot supply the missing keys for protected data. Apple's Advanced Data Protection guide
