Two-factor authentication helps when someone learns your password, but it can lock you out if the only authenticator or phone number disappears with an old handset. A backup code is a recovery route, not a code to read to a support caller. The safest device migration is a short overlap: keep the old phone available while the new factor and recovery details are tested, then retire the old method only after a successful sign-in.
Before you start
Use a trusted, signed-in device. Check that the email and phone number in Accounts Center are yours and accessible. Update the authenticator app using its documented transfer procedure; do not assume restoring the phone's photos restores the authenticator secrets. Keep a second safe place for recovery codes rather than a screenshot stored only on the phone being replaced.Do it step by step
- Open Instagram settings, Accounts Center, Password and security, Two-factor authentication, and choose the correct Instagram account. Record which methods are currently active before changing them.
- If you use an authenticator app, transfer the account using that app's official device-migration steps or add a new authenticator method if Instagram offers it. Confirm the displayed account name and enter a fresh code from the new phone to finish enrollment.
- Locate Instagram backup codes or additional recovery methods in the two-factor settings. Save unused codes in a trusted password manager or a protected offline record. Do not email a code to yourself, post it in chat or give it to anyone offering account help.
- On a second browser or device, sign in to the account using the password and the new authentication method. Leave the first device signed in until this test completes. Test that your recovery email is reachable without revealing a code to another person.
- Review login alerts and the Where you're logged in list. Remove an old authenticator or phone method only once you know the new one works and backup codes are accessible. Sign out and wipe the old device as part of your normal transfer, after any other app data is migrated.
- Store the recovery record separately from your daily phone and review it after changing a password, phone number or authenticator app. If you manage a shared professional account, avoid passing one person's personal codes among staff; review the proper account access arrangement.
