What it means
Protected View is Office's restricted reading mode for files from the internet or other potentially unsafe locations. It reduces the chance that active or malformed content affects the device while a person inspects a document. It does not establish who created the file or whether its claims are true.
A real-world example
A payroll-looking attachment opens with an Enable Editing banner. The recipient can read it, but must still verify the supposed sender before making changes or following a link inside it.
What to do
Confirm the document's origin using a known channel. If the task only needs reading, leave the file in the protected state and avoid embedded links.
The distinction that matters
