Recover a Dropbox folder deleted by mistake

A missing project folder is not always deleted: it may have been moved, renamed, unsynced or removed from a shared folder. Dropbox's Deleted files view is the right starting point for a confirmed deletion. Its recovery period varies by plan and may be affected by policies. Restoring blindly while teammates continue editing can also create confusing duplicates or replace the wrong working copy.

Before you start

Ask collaborators to pause major changes to the affected folder while you investigate. Record its old path, approximate deletion time and owner. Check the web account directly before assuming your desktop sync state reflects the server. Do not permanently delete anything while diagnosing the incident.

Do it step by step

  1. Search All files on dropbox.com for the folder and a distinctive file inside it. Inspect recent activity for a rename or move. If the folder was shared, ask its owner whether your membership changed.
  2. Open Deleted files and filter by location or time. Confirm the folder name, parent path and deletion event before choosing Restore. If several similarly named folders exist, inspect their contents so you do not restore an outdated copy over a current project.
  3. Select the specific deleted folder and choose Restore. Dropbox says recovered items return to the folder from which they were deleted. If the parent folder no longer exists, follow the on-screen destination and verify where the items land.
  4. Wait for web restoration to finish before judging the local desktop folder. Let the desktop app sync, then compare a few representative files, including the most recent expected edit and a subfolder. Do not start a second restore because sync looks briefly incomplete.
  5. If another user deleted the folder, discuss ownership and access with them. On a team account, an admin may have wider deletion filters. For large-scale changes, assess Dropbox Rewind separately because it can undo many edits as well as deletions.
  6. After recovery, make an independent copy of any irreplaceable files outside the same Dropbox synchronization chain. Review folder permissions and deletion history to reduce the chance of another accidental removal.

Check the result

The folder appears in the intended path on the web, the expected contents and recent changes are present, and the desktop copy finishes syncing without unexplained extra versions.

If something goes wrong

If the folder is absent from Deleted files, search for moves and membership changes first. Dropbox says permanently deleted items and items outside the account's retention period cannot normally be recovered. Do not trust a paid 'Dropbox recovery' utility that asks for account credentials.

Know the limit

Dropbox lists standard recovery periods of 30, 180 or 365 days depending on the plan, with possible policy exceptions. Rewind is a broader operation and may reverse changes that should remain. A restored folder is not proof that every missing local or unsynced file was ever uploaded. Dropbox deleted-file recovery Dropbox Rewind
