Recover a Windows 11 touchpad after an update without losing input

A touchpad that stops moving after an update can be disabled by a laptop key, missing from Device Manager, or affected by a driver. Trying to uninstall it while you have no other pointer can strand you at a difficult screen. Microsoft recommends Windows Update for touchpad drivers and notes that the device may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. Work from a known input fallback and separate a setting from a driver fault.

Before you start

Connect a working USB mouse and confirm the keyboard works before touching Device Manager. Write down the laptop model and note when the touchpad failed. Check the maker's manual for its touchpad function key or firmware setting. Save work and arrange a restore point if you will reinstall the driver. Work-managed laptops may require a vendor image.

Do it step by step

  1. Try the laptop's touchpad toggle key or hardware switch, then open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and check the On state. If it only fails with a mouse connected, inspect the setting that controls touchpad behavior when a mouse is attached.
  2. Open Device Manager and inspect both Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices. Record the touchpad's displayed name, status and driver version if present.
  3. Check Windows Update for a recommended driver, and if a recent driver update exactly matches the failure, inspect Roll Back Driver. Avoid a package intended for a different laptop model or touchpad controller.
  4. If Microsoft-supported updating does not work, use Device Manager's supported uninstall/reinstall path while the USB mouse remains connected. Scan for hardware changes or restart so Windows can detect the device again.
  5. Test pointer movement, tapping, two-finger scroll and wake from sleep. A cursor alone is insufficient if gestures were part of the original problem.
  6. If the touchpad is absent even after a restart and the manufacturer's firmware test also fails, seek hardware support. Keep the USB mouse available rather than repeating software reinstall cycles.

Check the result

The touchpad works after a normal restart and after sleep/wake, including the gestures you need. Device Manager reports normal status, and the backup USB mouse is no longer the only input method.

If something goes wrong

If the Windows setting is missing, the device may be exposed under a vendor utility or not detected at all. A loose internal cable, liquid damage or firmware disablement can mimic a driver issue. Do not open a sealed laptop solely because a guide suggests a driver fault.

Know the limit

Touchpad names and functions vary by manufacturer. Microsoft's driver path is general; model-specific settings and firmware belong to the vendor. Keep an alternative pointer until testing is complete. Microsoft touchpad troubleshooting Device Manager driver management

Decision checkpoint

If tap works but multi-finger gestures do not, capture that partial state. It can indicate a generic fallback driver rather than an absent touchpad. Compare the vendor's feature support and the actual driver name before accepting a reinstall that restores only basic movement.
