Recover an older Google Docs version without losing today's work

Version history can show who changed a Google Doc and when. The Restore action makes an earlier version current, which may be too broad if collaborators have made useful edits since then. A copy of the older version is often safer when you need only a paragraph or table.

Before you start

Confirm that you have edit permission and identify the approximate time of the missing content. Tell active collaborators before a full restore.

Do it step by step

  1. Open the document and select its Last edit or Version history control. Expand grouped versions until you find the period you need.
  2. Preview the earlier version and compare it with the current document. Check whether other people's later changes must be preserved.
  3. For a small recovery, choose Make a copy of the earlier version, name it clearly, and move only the needed content back into the current file.
  4. If a full rollback is agreed, consider naming or copying today's version first, then select Restore this version and confirm.
  5. Reopen the current document and verify both the recovered content and any recent edits that should remain. Tell collaborators what changed.

Check the result

The current file should contain the intended content, and the earlier or current safety copy should remain accessible if further correction is needed.

If something goes wrong

A viewer may be unable to inspect version history. If you cannot see versions, ask an editor or owner rather than creating an unrelated replacement file.

Know the limit

Version history is not the same as an independent backup; permissions and document deletion can affect access to all versions. Google's Docs version-history guide
