An unfamiliar IP or location can arise from travel, mobile networks or a VPN, while an attacker can also use a nearby network. A real-world example
Someone sees a sign-in from another city and immediately announces a breach. They then discover their phone's carrier exits through that city. In another case, a normal-looking IP is accompanied by spam chats; the behavior matters more than a map pin.
What to do
Review timestamps, devices and the actions performed around them. Change the password and log out sessions if credible misuse appears. Check the linked email and authorized apps; enable two-factor authentication and preserve evidence of suspicious activity.
The distinction that matters
An activity page is investigative evidence, not a forensic verdict. Logging out sessions stops current access but cannot retract messages or files already sent. A password reset does not secure an email inbox or device that remains compromised. Compare independent signals before assigning cause. Keep a dated record of what you saw, because a later investigation is much easier when the suspicious action and your recovery steps have clear timestamps.
