What it means
Reporting a Reddit message or account sends a specific concern for platform review under its rules. Blocking changes how that account can interact with you and what content you see. One does not automatically perform the other. Reddit recommends reporting a particular abusive chat message before using Ignore, then blocking if you also want to cut off contact.
A real-world example
A fake moderator requests a one-time code. The recipient blocks immediately, so new chats stop, but the original message was never reported. Another recipient reports the chat but leaves requests open, so the sender can continue trying to contact them.
What to do
Preserve relevant context, report the exact offending message with a factual reason, and then block the sender if appropriate. Narrow chat-request settings if the problem is recurring. For impersonation, report the account as well as the message where the platform provides that path.
The distinction that matters
A report may not result in removal, and blocking cannot undo a disclosed secret or recover money. A blocked person may use another account or platform. If you entered credentials or paid, secure the real account and contact the payment provider regardless of what Reddit decides. Keep a copy of a threatening message before blocking if a later support or law-enforcement report may require its exact wording.
