Remove a former editor from a YouTube channel safely

A contractor may be able to change videos or see channel data even after a project ends. YouTube Studio channel permissions allow named roles without sharing the owner's Google password. That makes offboarding precise, but only if you review the actual channel, not just the email thread that originally invited the editor. Brand Account ownership and Google-account access are separate surfaces that may also need checking.

Before you start​

Sign in as the channel owner or someone authorized to manage permissions. Identify the correct channel, the former editor's email and the role they were given. Coordinate with the team so an active upload or scheduled campaign is handed over before access is removed. Preserve a copy of any work product you need; removing access does not retract files already downloaded.

Do it step by step​

1. Open YouTube Studio for the correct channel and select Settings, Permissions. Read every current invitation and active role. Match emails rather than relying on a familiar display name; one collaborator may have more than one address.
2. Find the former editor and use the role menu to Remove access. If they still need limited work, choose the lowest role that actually supports it instead of retaining manager rights. Confirm the change in Studio.
3. Check for pending invites to old addresses. YouTube says invitations expire after 30 days, but cancel an unneeded invite now so it cannot be accepted in the meantime.
4. Review the remaining owners, managers and editors for unfamiliar addresses and excessive privilege. If a Brand Account migration or inherited owner path applies, inspect that separately before claiming the channel is locked down.
5. Have an authorized colleague test the tasks they still need, such as editing metadata, while the removed person confirms they cannot enter Studio for that channel. Do not test revocation from the owner's own browser session.
6. Review recent uploads, live streams, descriptions and monetization settings for unexplained changes during the access period. Rotate a shared password if the team ever used one, and switch to individual channel permissions going forward.

Check the result​

The former editor no longer appears with channel access, the correct collaborators retain only needed roles, and the channel still operates normally for them.

If something goes wrong​

If Permissions is absent, confirm you selected the right channel and hold a role allowed to manage access. Some Brand Account or product features use a different access surface. If the removed person still sees the channel, inspect another Google identity or ownership route and contact YouTube support where eligible.

Know the limit​

Removing channel permission stops future Studio access through that role; it does not revoke someone else's Google account session, undo past edits or delete downloaded assets.
