Remove a personal Chrome profile from a shared computer

Chrome profiles separate local history, bookmarks, passwords and settings, but a person with access to the same unlocked computer can switch to another profile. Signing out of a site or even Chrome is not the same as verifying that your local profile data is gone. Before returning a borrowed laptop or ending a shared-computer arrangement, identify the exact personal profile, confirm important data is backed up or synchronized, and remove the local copy without deleting another person's profile.

Before you start

Use a device that you are authorized to manage. Check which account is signed into Chrome and whether bookmarks or passwords exist only on this computer. Export or otherwise preserve necessary local data using a secure destination before deleting anything. Do not remove a work-managed profile without organizational approval, and do not assume Incognito clears ordinary profile data.

Do it step by step

  1. Open the Chrome profile menu and identify your profile by account, name and avatar. Inspect bookmarks and saved passwords you need, and confirm they are accessible on your own device or in your Google Account where applicable.
  2. Sign out of websites that hold sensitive sessions, especially banking or work systems, using their own account controls. Review those services' device-session lists if the computer will leave your control.
  3. Use Chrome's Manage Chrome profiles screen to locate the exact profile. Google's Remove profile action deletes that profile's local bookmarks, history, passwords and settings from this computer; read the warning carefully.
  4. Delete only your profile. Do not delete a colleague's or family member's profile to make the picker tidy. If the device is being sold, plan an operating-system user reset or full wipe separately.
  5. Reopen Chrome and confirm your profile is absent. Check the system user account for downloaded files, desktop shortcuts and other apps that may still contain your data.
  6. On your own trusted device, confirm cloud-saved bookmarks and passwords remain available. Change account passwords and revoke sessions if the shared computer was untrusted or left unlocked.

Check the result

The personal Chrome profile no longer appears on the shared computer, needed data remains available through a trusted backup or account, and sensitive service sessions are ended or revoked.

If something goes wrong

If data is missing from your own device, stop further cleanup and check whether it was only local before creating replacement accounts. If a managed profile cannot be deleted, contact the device administrator. If another OS user can still see downloads, remove those files through the approved device handoff process.

Know the limit

Chrome profile deletion is a local browser action; it does not remove your Google Account or automatically wipe files outside that profile. Chrome profiles are not a security boundary against anyone who can use the unlocked operating-system account. Sign-out and cloud-data controls have different effects, so verify both sides of the handoff. Google Chrome profiles Chrome account data
