Remove your Edge profile from a shared computer without deleting synced data

An Edge profile can hold cookies, bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions and a signed-in Microsoft account. Simply closing the browser window leaves those local items for the next user of the computer. At the same time, deleting browser data while signed in and syncing can remove data from other devices, Microsoft warns. On a shared or retired computer, first decide what must remain in the cloud, then remove the local profile deliberately.

Before you start​

Do this while you still have authorized access to the computer. Identify your profile by name and email, and confirm where important favorites and passwords are stored. If this is a work-managed device, follow your organization's handoff procedure. Do not delete another person's profile or clear a shared browser without checking ownership.

Do it step by step​

1. Open the profile icon, select Profile settings and inspect the profiles listed. Confirm which one contains your Microsoft or work account. Open Settings, Profiles, Sync and note which data types currently sync.
2. Verify a needed bookmark or password on another device or in the appropriate account before removing this profile. A signed-in profile is not itself a backup plan; keep an independent recovery route for irreplaceable data.
3. Sign out of the profile and turn off sync if you are leaving the computer. Review any warning about local and synced data carefully. Do not select a broad clear-data action while sync is active without understanding what it may remove elsewhere.
4. In Profile settings, under More profiles, use the delete or remove control for your identified profile. Microsoft documents this local profile-removal path. Confirm you selected the right profile and the intended local-data action.
5. Inspect Edge's profile switcher after removal. Reopen the browser to verify your account, bookmarks and saved passwords are no longer exposed in that computer's profile. Check Downloads separately because files saved outside the browser profile may remain on disk.
6. If you used the computer for work or payments, review your Microsoft account's devices and sign-in activity from a trusted device. Removing an Edge profile is not the same as revoking every website session or wiping the whole operating system.

Check the result​

The shared computer no longer opens your Edge profile or saved credentials, and needed synced data remains available from the correct account on another trusted device.

If something goes wrong​

If data disappeared on another device after a clear-data action, stop syncing changes and use the service's recovery or backup options promptly. If the profile cannot be removed due to organization policy, contact its administrator. For a one-time guest, use Edge's Guest profile next time; Microsoft says it avoids retaining normal history and data.

Know the limit​

Removing a local Edge profile is different from deleting a Microsoft account or revoking sessions at every website. Downloaded files and Windows-level sign-in can remain.
