Repair Windows 11 without wiping your apps and files

Repeated Windows Update failures or damaged system components can lead people to reach for a factory reset too early. On supported Windows 11 builds, Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the current version while preserving apps, files and settings. A backup is still prudent before any operating-system repair.

Before you start​

Confirm you have a working internet connection, sufficient power, free storage and a recent file backup. Note error messages so you can judge whether repair succeeded.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Settings → System → Recovery and locate Fix problems using Windows Update. If absent, do not use an unrelated download claiming to add it.
2. Choose Reinstall now and read the confirmation. Make sure you selected the current-version repair, not Reset this PC or a clean installation.
3. Choose the restart timing offered and keep the laptop plugged in. The download and installation can take time; do not close the lid or power off mid-process.
4. Let Windows complete its restart and sign in normally. Check the original failing update or component and confirm key apps, files and settings remain present.
5. Run Windows Update again and note the installed build. If the same error persists, capture the exact code and consult Microsoft's troubleshooting guidance or an administrator.

Check the result​

The original failure should be gone and files and apps should remain. Test a representative application and open a personal file, not just the desktop.

If something goes wrong​

The option can be unavailable on older builds or managed devices. Do not change workplace update policy to reveal it. If Windows cannot boot, use documented recovery routes and your backup.

Know the limit​

The repair is designed to preserve files, apps and settings, but it cannot guarantee recovery from hardware failure or malware persistence. Microsoft specifies supported conditions and the power/internet requirement. Microsoft's current-version repair instructions
