Report a scam in Reddit Chat without losing the evidence

A private chat request may promise a giveaway, demand a verification fee or pretend to be a moderator. Reddit specifically advises reporting the particular chat message rather than just ignoring the request: Ignore can make it disappear from your view before you report it. Blocking is useful to stop contact, but it is a separate step from reporting the content for review.

Before you start​

Do not open a payment link, download an attachment or share a code to prove you are real. Capture the username, message text, date and any payment or URL details if you may need them for a service or bank report. Do not repost sensitive personal information in a public accusation. If you already paid, contact the payment provider promptly through a known route.

Do it step by step​

1. Open the chat request or conversation within reddit.com or the official app. Inspect the sender's exact username and the message itself. An avatar, flair or claim of being 'support' does not establish authority.
2. On desktop, open the full chat, hover over the offending message and choose the flag/report control. On mobile, press and hold that message, then choose Report. Select the most accurate reason and submit a factual report.
3. After reporting, block the account if you do not want further contact. Blocking should stop new chats and hide much of the account's content from you, but it does not reverse a payment or remove material copied outside Reddit.
4. Review Settings, Privacy or the mobile app's Chat permissions. Choose a narrower audience for requests, such as accounts older than 30 days or nobody, according to your needs. Reddit notes moderators and admins may still reach you in specific circumstances.
5. If the message impersonates another member or community, separately report the account or content using Reddit's impersonation route and notify the real person through an established channel. Avoid starting a public pile-on based on a similar display name.
6. If you disclosed a password or one-time code, secure the real account directly and review sessions. If you installed software, scan the device. If the message contained threats, preserve evidence and use applicable emergency or local reporting routes.

Check the result​

The specific chat message was reported, the sender cannot continue contacting you if blocked, and your request settings match the level of contact you want.

If something goes wrong​

If you already pressed Ignore, look for the conversation in chat history and use Reddit's report route if it is still available. If a report control is missing, update the app or use reddit.com and consult Reddit Help. A moderator message is not inherently safe just because it is allowed through chat permissions.

Know the limit​

A report asks Reddit to review a possible rule violation; it is not a guaranteed removal or a fraud refund. Blocking protects your experience on Reddit but cannot prevent the same person from using another account or a different platform. Save evidence before it disappears.
