A critical storage warning is different from an ordinary low-space notice. Microsoft says Windows can show drive-health details for NVM SSDs under Disks & volumes, but its built-in monitoring does not cover SATA SSDs or hard disks in the same way. A warning about reliability or spare capacity calls for immediate data protection, not a cleanup run. The drive may still work today and fail during the next large copy or update.
Before you start
Stop optional writes and make a prioritized backup of irreplaceable files to another physical destination. Verify samples open there. If BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before hardware replacement. Record the PC model, SSD model, exact warning, free space and any freezing or boot symptoms. An organization-managed device should be reported to IT promptly.Do it step by step
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. Select the warned disk and Properties to read the health details Microsoft exposes. Record the text and values instead of relying on a toast notification.
- Check whether the warning concerns the system NVMe disk or an external one. Compare capacity and model carefully. Do not format, initialize or reset a disk that contains the only copy of your data.
- Finish a small, verified backup first, then continue with priority folders in manageable groups. If read errors or long stalls appear, stop retries that may worsen the situation and seek professional recovery for irreplaceable data.
- Use the PC or SSD manufacturer's official diagnostic and firmware guidance. Check warranty status and replacement options. A firmware update can be risky on an unstable drive; do not use it as a substitute for a completed backup.
- Plan replacement or service, including Windows reinstall or drive cloning only if the drive is stable enough. Secure the BitLocker key and activation/account information needed afterward.
- After replacement, restore a sampled backup, verify the operating system and then wipe or dispose of the old drive according to its condition and your data policy. Document the replacement model and warning resolution.
