Time Machine is useful when a document is deleted or overwritten, but the quickest recovery is usually a targeted restore. Restoring the entire Mac would be excessive for a single missing file and can replace newer work.
Before you start
Connect the usual backup disk if it is available. Work from the folder where the file originally lived and decide approximately when you last saw the correct version.Do it step by step
- Open Finder to the original folder, such as Documents. If the file was on the Desktop, you can start from the Desktop instead.
- Open Time Machine using Spotlight or the menu-bar control. Wait for the backup timeline to load before concluding a date is missing.
- Move backward through available backups and select the desired file. Use Quick Look or open a candidate if the interface permits, and compare its date and size with what you expect.
- Select the file or folder and choose Restore. If a same-named current item exists, read the replacement or keep-both choice carefully; preserve the current copy before replacing it.
- Open the restored file in its normal app and check the contents, not merely that a filename returned. Keep a copy of the verified version outside a folder that is currently being heavily edited.
