Restore test: the backup check that matters

What it is

A restore test retrieves a small sample from a backup and verifies its contents. A backup log that says Success only confirms the software completed an operation; it does not prove that the right files are included or that you can access the encryption key when the computer fails.

How to try it

Select a harmless document and a photo from a recent backup. Restore them into a new folder, open both, compare dates and contents, then remove only the temporary test copies. For phone backups, inspect listed backup contents and verify restored data on a replacement or spare device rather than factory-resetting your working phone. CISA's recovery guidance stresses regular restore testing.

What to record

Note the test date, backup source, files recovered and any missing data. Recheck after changing devices, cloud accounts or backup software. A failed test is valuable because it reveals the gap before a real emergency. Fix the missing file selection or unavailable encryption key before the next test.
