A trade discussed in chat is not the same as the offer actually presented to you. Steam warns about switched item quality, high-value items hidden among cheap ones, impersonated friends and promises of payment outside the trade window. Mobile or email confirmation is the last control before a trade or Market listing is submitted. Approving quickly because a counterparty says a timer is running defeats that control.
Before you start
Use your own Steam client and mobile app; do not follow a trade URL pasted by an unknown person to a lookalike site. Know what items and consideration should be present in one offer. If real money, a CD key or future delivery is part of the deal, Steam says that value cannot be placed in the trade window and the exchange is outside its recommended protections.Do it step by step
- Open the actual pending trade offer inside Steam, not a screenshot from the other person. Confirm the recipient's account through your own Friends list or a separate known channel. Names and avatars can be copied or changed.
- Inspect every item that leaves your inventory, including those in long lists. Hover or open details for quality, effects, edition and other value-changing properties. Compare with the conversation, but let the offer itself be the final authority.
- Inspect everything you receive in the same single offer. Reject a request to send your items now and receive payment, a CD key or the other items later. A trade to a 'verification bot' with nothing in return is still a giveaway.
- Read the mobile or email confirmation carefully: recipient, outgoing items and whether it is a trade or a Market listing. Do not approve a confirmation you cannot match to an action you initiated. An unfamiliar confirmation is a security alert, not a chore to clear.
- If a listing is involved, check the Market price and item. Cancel and rebuild an offer containing a switched or missing item instead of relying on chat promises to repair it after approval.
- After a legitimate trade, review trade history and inventory. If a confirmation appeared without your action, cancel it, change the password, secure the recovery email, review authorized devices and contact Steam Support with the offer details.
