Review Mac app access to files, camera and microphone

A one-time permission prompt can become a long-lived grant. An old app may still have access to Documents, camera, microphone or location even when you no longer use it. A review helps reduce exposure without indiscriminately denying functions you rely on.

Before you start

Close sensitive documents and note which apps need access for work. Expect a video meeting app to need camera and microphone during a call, but question access from an unrelated utility.

Do it step by step

  1. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security. Review Camera, Microphone, Location Services and Files & Folders one category at a time.
  2. For each listed app, identify the exact feature requiring that grant. Read the name carefully: a familiar-looking icon is not enough to establish that it is the app you intended to install.
  3. Turn off access for an app you no longer use or for a permission unrelated to its job. Make one change at a time so you can identify which switch affects a workflow.
  4. Review other high-impact categories such as Screen & System Audio Recording and Full Disk Access. Do not grant these permissions merely because an installer insists without a clear purpose.
  5. Test the essential app feature, such as joining a test meeting or opening a document. If macOS asks again, decide based on the action you initiated rather than accepting a generic prompt.

Check the result

The list should reflect current use. A denied app should no longer receive that category of access, while the apps you rely on should still perform their expected tasks.

If something goes wrong

If a feature breaks, return to the specific permission category and restore only the grant it needs. On a managed Mac, some choices may be controlled by organizational policy.
