What it means
Firmware is the router's operating software. The version displayed in the official admin interface helps you compare installed software with the manufacturer's supported release. Router updates can be automatic or manual depending on the model and provider.
A real-world example
A router reboots after you press Update, but the version number remains unchanged. The update may have failed or the offered package may not apply to that hardware revision. Repeating a random download is not a safe fix.
What to do
Record model, hardware revision and current version before updating. Use the built-in check or the manufacturer's exact-model instructions, then compare the version afterward and test connectivity.
The distinction that matters
A newer version string does not mean the router is still receiving future security fixes. FTC recommends checking device updates; if support ended, evaluate replacement rather than assuming one old patch solves it.
