Secure an eBay account after an unknown purchase or listing

An unknown bid, purchase or listing can indicate that someone is using your eBay account. eBay advises changing the account password and reviewing contact details, shipping addresses, payment information and active listings. The email account matters too: if an intruder controls it, they may reset eBay access after you change the password. A temporary account hold can be a protective measure, not proof the problem is resolved.

Before you start

Open eBay from a trusted device. Capture order numbers, dates, seller or buyer details and screenshots of unauthorized changes. Do not message a suspected attacker from the account or accept a 'refund' link sent in chat. If card charges are present, contact the card issuer promptly through a known number.

Do it step by step

  1. Change your eBay password to a unique value from the account settings. If you cannot sign in, use eBay's official hacked-account help and contact support immediately, as its guidance recommends.
  2. Secure the personal email associated with eBay with a different password and review its recovery options and sign-in activity. Check whether unfamiliar forwarding rules or devices were added; email control can undermine eBay recovery.
  3. Review eBay contact information, shipping addresses and payment details. Restore unauthorized changes, then inspect bids, offers, purchases and active listings for anything you did not create.
  4. Contact eBay about unauthorized bids or listings and provide concrete order or item numbers. eBay says you need its help removing fraudulent activity. Do not assume deleting a listing yourself settles obligations to a buyer.
  5. Contact your bank or card company for unrecognized charges and follow its dispute route. Save case numbers. An eBay account investigation and a payment dispute solve different parts of the incident.
  6. After the account is stable, review security settings, use a strong unique password and supported second-factor methods, and inspect the device for malware if you followed a suspicious email or installed software.

Check the result

The account's identity and shipping details are yours, unknown listings or transactions are documented with eBay, and payment providers are handling any unauthorized charge.

If something goes wrong

If support placed a hold, follow its official instructions rather than seeking a bypass. If a family member placed the order, document that before filing a fraud claim. If a new listing appears after password change, investigate email, device and any other person with account access.

Know the limit

Changing a password cannot reverse a completed payment, shipment or message to another person. eBay, a bank and a card network may have separate deadlines and evidence requirements. This guide is an incident checklist, not a guarantee of refund. eBay hacked account eBay account security tips
