Android Private DNS can send compatible DNS requests over an encrypted connection to a chosen resolver. A custom hostname may improve privacy from a local network, but a typo or blocked connection can make websites appear unreachable. Public Wi-Fi login pages can also complicate initial access.
Before you start
Record the existing setting and obtain the provider hostname from its official documentation, not a social-media screenshot. If the phone belongs to work, check its network policy first.Do it step by step
- Open Settings, Network & internet, then Private DNS or the manufacturer's equivalent. Note whether it currently uses Automatic, Off or a hostname.
- Choose a trusted provider hostname and enter it exactly. Do not paste a normal website URL, IP address or unverified string into a hostname field.
- Save and test several known sites on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Confirm that the phone has internet access after reconnecting.
- On a hotel or café network, complete the official captive-portal sign-in first. If access fails, temporarily restore the recorded setting and retry the network login.
- After leaving that network, re-enable the intended Private DNS value and test again. Keep the provider name in a recovery note.
