Set TikTok video-download and account privacy for a teen

A private account changes who may follow and view posts, but a public username and profile photo remain visible. TikTok's teen settings also restrict direct messages, downloads, Duets, Stitches and comments according to age. Turning downloads off cannot delete copies already saved by another person. A useful family review therefore checks the audience for each post and the ways a public video can be reused, not only one Private account switch.

Before you start​

Talk with the teen about which people they want to reach and what content should never be posted. Use the teen's real age in the account settings; age-based safety rules cannot be evaluated using an adult test account. If Family Pairing is active, check which settings the guardian controls and explain changes rather than silently overriding preferences.

Do it step by step​

1. On the teen's device, open Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Privacy and inspect Private account. TikTok says private accounts require follower approval, while public posts can be visible and shareable on and off the service.
2. Review the current follower list. Remove or block accounts the teen does not recognize. A private switch does not undo access already granted to followers, so the follower review matters.
3. Open Downloads. TikTok's current guidance says downloads are off for private accounts and for users under 16, and cannot be enabled in those cases. For an eligible public account, decide whether to leave Video downloads off.
4. Inspect each sensitive post's audience. Set it to a narrower audience or remove it when appropriate. Then check Duet, Stitch, Stories and comment settings separately; a download switch does not control all forms of reuse.
5. Review the direct-message controls together. TikTok says DMs are unavailable at ages 13–15; older teens have age-specific request defaults. Verify the actual account rather than assuming an adult's menu applies.
6. If using Family Pairing, confirm the guardian and teen accounts are connected and review the agreed restrictions and screen-time controls. Recheck the visible profile and a sample post from an account that is not an approved follower.

Check the result​

The family can state who can see each reviewed post, who can download or reuse eligible content, and which people remain approved followers. The teen understands the settings rather than only seeing a locked toggle.

If something goes wrong​

If a video remains visible after changing the account to private, confirm which account is viewing it and whether they are already a follower. A previously downloaded file may remain on another device. If the download control is unavailable, check the account's age and privacy state before troubleshooting the app.

Know the limit​

Privacy settings cannot prevent screenshots or copies created while content was public. A private account's username and profile photo are still discoverable, and Family Pairing is not a substitute for conversation about sharing and scams.
