A password manager can become a single point of failure if only one person can access vital accounts during an emergency. Bitwarden offers an emergency-access feature for eligible paid accounts: a trusted contact requests access, you can approve or deny it, and an unanswered request can be granted after a chosen wait time. This is not the same as sharing your master password today.
Plan and test the arrangement
- Decide which person should help and whether they truly need the entire individual vault. Discuss the responsibility, how they will identify a genuine emergency and what they should do with any sensitive information they see.
- In Bitwarden's web app, use Settings → Emergency access to invite that person. Confirm they have their own Bitwarden account on the same server and accept the invitation.
- Choose View if read-only access suffices, or Takeover only if the person must be able to replace the master password. Set a wait time long enough for you to reject an unexpected request, but useful in a real emergency.
- Test that the contact can see the invitation and understands the request path without granting live vault access as a rehearsal. Keep your account email, two-step login and recovery records current; revisit the contact list when relationships change.
