Share a Windows 11 connection as a temporary hotspot safely

A laptop hotspot is useful during a router outage or when a wired network must reach a second device. Windows can share Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and cellular sharing consumes the data plan. The risk is forgetting which upstream connection is exposed, using a weak password or leaving the hotspot running after the task. Treat it as a short-lived network you control and verify from a second device.

Before you start

Confirm you are allowed to share the upstream network; offices and hotels may prohibit rebroadcasting it. Check whether it is metered or cellular and estimate data cost. Use a strong unique hotspot password, not the same password as your Microsoft account or home router. Keep the laptop plugged in if the session will be long.

Do it step by step

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot. Under Share my internet connection from, choose the exact working upstream connection. Do not assume the default is the connection you intended.
  2. Under Share over, choose Wi-Fi for typical speed or Bluetooth when appropriate. Edit the hotspot name and password; avoid broadcasting your full name or workplace in the SSID.
  3. Turn on Mobile hotspot and connect one intended device with the password or QR code. Check the connected-device count and open a trusted HTTPS site on that device.
  4. Verify the laptop's own connection still works and that data usage on the upstream plan is acceptable. If a client connects but has no internet, recheck which upstream link is being shared.
  5. Keep the hotspot on only as long as needed. Disconnect clients and turn it off through Settings or Quick Settings. Check that the connected-device count returns to zero.
  6. If you must reuse it, save the configuration details securely and review the password and upstream selection each time. Avoid treating the temporary hotspot as a permanent replacement for a maintained router.

Check the result

The intended client reaches the internet through the selected upstream link and no unexpected devices are connected. After the session, the hotspot is off.

If something goes wrong

If the option is missing, check the Wi-Fi adapter's capabilities and device policy. If tethering fails only on cellular, check carrier plan restrictions and signal. A connected client without browsing may indicate upstream outage, not a bad password.

Know the limit

A hotspot does not anonymize traffic or override the security policy of the upstream network. Sharing cellular can incur charges. Microsoft supports configurable name, password and band, but hardware and operator capabilities vary. Microsoft mobile hotspot Metered connections

Decision checkpoint

Check the connected-device list during the session, not only afterward. If you see an unfamiliar client, turn the hotspot off, change its password and restart with only the intended device. The hotspot's network name is visible to people nearby, so avoid including personal details or sensitive project names. A QR code reveals the access details to anyone who can scan it.
