What it means
A Steam Family adult can manage family invitations and restrictions; a child account can be subject to parental controls. A child purchase request lets an adult inspect and pay for a specific shopping cart. Approving a cart does not make the child an adult, and inviting another person as Adult grants much broader ongoing power than paying for one game. These distinctions matter when several caregivers share responsibility.
A real-world example
One parent wants to buy a child a game and accidentally invites a relative as Adult to 'help with payment.' That relative can now manage family settings. A purchase request would have provided the narrower action without changing the family role.
What to do
Review the Family Management member list, correct unexpected adult roles and enable child controls. Test a purchase request from the child account and read the actual cart before paying. Keep adult passwords and payment methods out of the child's login.
The distinction that matters
Steam Families also shares eligible libraries, but some games cannot be shared and membership changes may have cooldowns. Parental controls inside Steam do not control every app or website on the computer. An Adult label is a durable management role, not a one-time approval token.
