Stop a fake giveaway link from spreading through your YouTube comments

Scammers place lookalike creator accounts, prize claims and external links in comment replies. Removing one comment may be enough for a one-off post; repeated accounts require moderation settings and reporting. YouTube Studio separates published comments from Held comments, including likely spam. A fair response targets the deceptive behavior while retaining legitimate viewer questions and criticism.

Before you start​

Capture the scam's link and impersonating username before removal if you need to alert viewers or file a report. Do not follow the external link. Confirm you are in the correct channel and video before changing settings for all uploads. Prepare a short public warning through your genuine pinned comment or Community channel if viewers may already be targeted.

Do it step by step​

1. Open YouTube Studio, Comments and review recent replies on affected videos. Look for usernames resembling yours, requests to move to messaging apps, fees or codes for a prize, and repeated links across threads.
2. Report clear spam or impersonation through the comment's report control. YouTube allows creators to report spam while reviewing comments. Use the accurate reason rather than mass-reporting disagreement.
3. Remove offending comments or Hide user from channel for a repeat offender. Check whether the account returns with a new name; hiding one account does not automatically catch a network of accounts.
4. Review the Held tab and 'Likely spam' entries. Approve genuine viewer replies mistakenly held, and remove or report malicious ones. A held comment has not necessarily been published, so avoid warning a viewer about a message they never saw.
5. Inspect channel and video-level comment settings, blocked words and link controls. Tighten only what addresses the abuse; an overly broad blocked-word list can suppress useful reports from your audience.
6. Post a clear warning from your verified channel that giveaways are announced only through named official routes and never require a payment or login code. Monitor replies for a few days and keep a record of repeat patterns.

Check the result​

The known scam replies and impersonating accounts no longer appear to ordinary viewers, genuine comments are still visible, and the audience has a trustworthy way to check future offers.

If something goes wrong​

If a hidden account's replies still show in your own moderation view, test as a normal viewer to understand what is public. If legitimate comments are held, adjust filters and approve them individually. Report the impersonating channel separately if comments keep returning.

Know the limit​
