Store a WhatsApp encrypted-backup password before changing phones

An end-to-end encrypted WhatsApp backup can require a password or 64-digit key when restoring on a new device. If you lose both that secret and access to the original chats, WhatsApp cannot reset the password for the old backup. This can turn a routine phone replacement into permanent chat loss.

Before you start​

Confirm which phone currently has the complete chats and whether its backup setting is enabled. Use a secure password manager or another protected recovery location you can access after the phone is lost.

Do it step by step​

1. In WhatsApp, open Settings, Chats, Chat backup, End-to-end encrypted backup and inspect the current state without deleting anything.
2. If you know the backup password or key, store it securely and verify that the recovery record can be accessed from a different device or trusted location.
3. If you forgot the password but still have the working chats, use WhatsApp's Change password or I forgot my password path as offered by the app before replacing the phone.
4. Run a fresh backup after the change and wait for it to finish. Confirm the displayed time and destination account are the ones you expect.
5. Before wiping the old phone, use the app's supported transfer or restore route on the new phone and confirm that essential conversations and media are present.

Check the result​

You should have a completed recent backup, a recoverable password or key, and a successful check of important chats on the destination device.

If something goes wrong​

If the old phone is gone and the secret is unknown, repeated guesses may trigger waiting periods. Avoid anyone promising a paid bypass; WhatsApp says it cannot reset an inaccessible encrypted backup.

Know the limit​
