What it means
Microsoft stores Teams channel uploads in the team's SharePoint folder. A file sent in a one-to-one or group chat is usually stored in the sender's OneDrive for Business and shared with people in that conversation. The different owners and inheritance rules matter when a teammate leaves, a link is forwarded or access must be removed. A Teams message is a pointer and conversation record; it is not always the sole permission for the file.
A real-world example
An employee posts a spreadsheet in a channel, then shares another version in a private chat. The channel copy is available to the channel's authorized members, while the chat copy is tied to the sender's OneDrive and its sharing grants.
What to do
Find the file through the channel or chat Shared tab, open Manage access, and check owner, people, groups and links. Revoke or narrow permission at the actual file location after the project.
The distinction that matters
Moving a discussion to a private chat does not privatize an existing channel file link. Deleting the message may leave file sharing in place. A downloaded copy survives permission revocation. Teams Free and consumer accounts can behave differently from work or school tenants; follow the storage location shown for the account you use. Check a parent folder's grants when a file appears accessible despite removal of its direct link.
