What it means
A guest is an outside person invited into an organization's Teams environment, usually through an admin-controlled invitation. An external or anonymous attendee may join a meeting without becoming a persistent guest of the team. External Access can also allow cross-organization chat without giving channel membership. These labels describe collaboration paths, not proof that a displayed person is who they claim to be.
A real-world example
A contractor needs one planning call but receives a guest invitation to an entire project team. The extra membership may expose channel history and files beyond the call's purpose.
What to do
Verify the expected email by a known route, choose the narrowest collaboration path, review lobby and presenter options, and inspect team and file permissions afterward. Remove unnecessary guest access when the work ends.
The distinction that matters
An invitation can be forwarded or accepted from the wrong account; verify the actual identity and tenant. A guest account does not automatically open every recording, while an external meeting attendee can still receive a widely shared file link. Organization policies may disable one path entirely. Avoid solving a blocked guest workflow by making a document public without the owner and security team's approval. When a consultant's engagement ends, review persistent team membership and separately shared files rather than only deleting calendar invites.
