What it means
Telegram Cloud Chats are encrypted between the client and Telegram's servers and can sync across your signed-in devices. Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption between participating devices and remain on their originating devices, outside Telegram's cloud-chat storage. The app can contain both types of conversation with the same person. The label matters more than an assumption that every Telegram chat has identical protection.
A real-world example
A person discusses routine travel plans in a cloud chat and finds them on a laptop. They start a Secret Chat for a sensitive detail, then discover that it is absent from the laptop as designed.
What to do
Confirm the actual chat type before sending sensitive material. For a Secret Chat, compare its key through a trusted channel when warranted and plan for the risk of losing device-specific history.
The distinction that matters
End-to-end encryption does not prevent the recipient from photographing the screen or an unlocked phone from being read. A self-destruct timer is not an assured deletion of every copy. Cloud sync improves recoverability but creates a different access surface: every authorized session can read cloud chats. Choose based on threat and record needs rather than a blanket claim that one option is always best. Logging out of the originating device can erase access to its Secret Chats.
