What it means
A Telegram login code proves temporary access to the account's phone number or an existing Telegram session. Two-Step Verification adds a password for new sign-ins, with an optional recovery email. A code is short-lived and should only be entered into the official sign-in flow you initiated. The additional password must be unique and stored securely; the recovery email also needs strong protection.
A real-world example
A caller says they are from Telegram support and asks for the code that just arrived. The code could complete their login attempt. If Two-Step Verification is off, sharing it may be enough for them to sign in.
What to do
Never disclose the code or password. Open Telegram yourself, check Devices, turn on Two-Step Verification and verify the recovery email. Contact the carrier if the number has been taken over.
The distinction that matters
Neither secret identifies the person on the phone. Two-Step Verification does not log out an existing session; remove unfamiliar devices separately. A device passkey may replace an SMS step in supported flows, but it does not make it safe to approve an unexpected prompt. Losing both the password and recovery route can make account access difficult, so recovery planning is part of setup. Test from a second device you own while the trusted phone remains signed in.
