Family Pairing connects a guardian account with a teen's account so a guardian can manage selected safety and screen-time settings. A private account controls who the teen approves to follow and view posts. Pairing does not automatically mean every post is visible only to family, and a private profile does not provide a guardian with all the controls available through pairing. Age-based platform defaults still apply.
A real-world example
A parent pairs accounts to set screen-time and messaging restrictions, but the teen's older public video remains visible. The family assumed pairing had hidden past content, although it changed a different set of controls.
What to do
Review Family Pairing settings together, then inspect the teen account's Private account switch, followers and the audience of representative posts. Test from a non-follower account. Explain why a restriction exists and revisit it as the teen's needs change.
The distinction that matters
Neither feature prevents someone who already downloaded a video from keeping it, nor does it control every website or device. TikTok's under-18 rules can override choices, and exact features differ by age and location. Use the live account and current help page rather than an adult-account screenshot, and review it again when age eligibility changes.
