What it means
A message request is a first contact from an account not already in the normal conversation path. TikTok lets eligible users choose which audiences may send requests and can filter some into a separate queue. Accepting a request moves it into the regular inbox; changing future request settings may not remove an existing conversation. The distinction matters when a scammer gets a reply and then continues contacting you.
A real-world example
A stranger sends a brand-deal pitch. It is filtered as a request, then the account owner accepts it to ask for details. The contact now appears in regular chats, so hiding future requests from strangers will not necessarily silence this thread.
What to do
Review Message requests and Filtered requests before accepting anything. Verify a business offer through an independently found channel. For an existing unwanted chat, report or block the sender from the conversation; use request controls for future unknown senders.
The distinction that matters
A filtered request can still contain a real customer inquiry, and an accepted chat can still be fraudulent. Age rules limit who can use DMs at all: TikTok says the feature is unavailable to 13–15-year-olds. Treat sender identity and link safety as separate questions from inbox placement.
