What it means
Edge sync can carry categories such as favorites, passwords, tabs, history, extensions and payment information across devices signed into the same account. Turning a category off affects synchronization behavior; it is not a universal delete command for copies already stored locally or elsewhere. Signing out of a profile and deleting profile data are separate actions with different results. The exact available controls can vary by account type and organization policy.
A real-world example
A person disables password sync on a family PC after months of use. They assume no one can open previously saved entries, but the profile still exists in the same unlocked Windows session. They must inspect and remove local profile data or stop using that shared session.
What to do
Before enabling sync on another computer, choose categories intentionally. When leaving, inspect Edge's sign-out and profile-removal choices, and check the operating-system user account. Review other devices from an account you control if a device went missing.
The distinction that matters
A separate Edge profile can prevent accidental mixing with another profile, but it is not a hard security boundary against someone controlling the same OS login. A managed device may keep other logs beyond Edge sync. Treat device ownership and screen lock as part of the decision.
