Update home-router firmware without using a fake download

Router firmware is the software that operates the device connecting your home network to the internet. Updates can fix security faults, but searching for a model name and clicking the first sponsored file is risky. Many routers can check for updates within their own administrative interface.

Before you start

Photograph the model label and note the current firmware version and internet settings. If the router belongs to your internet provider, ask whether it updates automatically before changing it yourself.

Do it step by step

  1. Sign in through the router's known local admin address or its official app while connected to your home network. Do not use a link in an unexpected text message to reach the admin page.
  2. Locate Firmware, Software Update or System Update. Read the current version and whether automatic updates are available. Record the configuration or export a backup if the vendor supports it.
  3. Use the built-in check first. If manual installation is required, obtain the file from the manufacturer's site for the exact model and hardware revision, not a driver bundle or mirror.
  4. Keep the router powered and do not interrupt the update. Expect the Wi-Fi connection to drop during reboot; wait for the normal status indicators before retrying.
  5. Sign back in and compare the firmware version. Verify internet, Wi-Fi, guest network and one important device. Recheck that administrative password and remote-management settings retained the intended state.

Check the result

The version should reflect the expected update and everyday connections should work. Keep the version/date in a short home-network record.

If something goes wrong

If the vendor has stopped releasing fixes, repeatedly flashing an old version will not solve support gaps. Ask the manufacturer or provider about replacement. Do not use a firmware file for a similar model.

Know the limit

A firmware update does not replace a strong admin password or encrypted Wi-Fi. FTC's home-device guidance recommends regular router and connected-device updates. FTC home-device security advice
