Use a metered Windows 11 connection without silently missing updates

Marking a limited network metered tells Windows and some apps to reduce background data use. Microsoft notes that some updates will not install automatically on a metered connection, so the setting is a cost control rather than an update pause with no consequences. It matters when tethering through a phone or using a capped broadband plan. Make a specific update plan so a saved gigabyte does not become months of missing security fixes.

Before you start

Check your plan's data cap and current use with the provider, not only Windows' estimate. Note which network is expensive; a household Ethernet link may be unlimited while a phone hotspot is not. On a managed PC, IT can control the setting. Keep power and enough disk space for updates when you later switch to an unmetered network.

Do it step by step

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi and select the currently connected network, or choose Ethernet for a wired connection. Turn Metered connection on only for the connection that incurs cost.
  2. Review Windows Update > Advanced options. If a critical update must install now, Microsoft's setting Download updates over metered connections can permit it, but confirm that the data cost is acceptable first.
  3. Check apps and cloud sync individually. Metered mode may change their behavior, but it does not promise that every third-party app stops all transfers. Pause a large optional sync through its own control if necessary.
  4. Use the phone or router provider's actual data-usage view to see whether consumption fell. Windows' setting is a request to software, not a carrier billing limit.
  5. When you reach a trusted unmetered connection, review pending Windows and application updates, install them, restart and verify completion. Keep this as a calendar habit if you tether frequently.
  6. Return to the capped connection and verify its Metered switch remains on. Record any app that ignores the hint and configure that app directly.

Check the result

Data use on the expensive network is controlled, and pending security updates are installed on a planned trusted connection. The metered setting applies to the intended network, not every connection.

If something goes wrong

A greyed-out switch can be organization policy. If an app stops syncing needed work, schedule a manual sync on an appropriate connection. If unexpected charges continue, inspect the provider's usage details and individual app traffic.

Know the limit

Metered mode may delay updates and does not enforce an absolute data cap. Cellular is generally metered by default; Wi-Fi and Ethernet can be set manually. Windows and third-party behavior can differ. Microsoft metered connections

Decision checkpoint

A measured data plan still needs a reserve for urgent patches, security scans and account recovery. Estimate the data cost before enabling download over metered connections, and do not defer every update for an entire billing cycle by habit. If a critical fix is announced, use a trusted unmetered network promptly. Record the date of the next planned update check.
