Use Android Identity Check without making your home a weak point

Android Identity Check can require biometric verification for certain sensitive actions when the phone is outside trusted places. This helps if a thief sees a screen PIN before stealing the device. A trusted place is an approximate area, not a room-sized perimeter, and Google notes that location signals can be copied or manipulated. Configure the feature with that limitation in mind and keep the screen lock strong everywhere.

Before you start​

Check whether Identity Check appears under Theft protection on your device; availability varies by model and Android version. Set up a working biometric and strong screen lock first. Review which places you consider trusted, and avoid adding broad locations simply for convenience.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Settings, Google, All services and Theft protection, then look for Identity Check. If it is missing, the phone may not support it; do not assume it is active by default.
2. Enable the feature and follow the on-screen prompts. Note which sensitive account and device changes receive added biometric verification outside trusted places.
3. Open Trusted places under Location services and inspect saved addresses. Google says the estimated area can extend about 100 meters beyond the mapped location, so a crowded public building is a poor trusted place.
4. Remove obsolete places and keep only locations you actually control. A home or work address change may remove a saved trusted place; check again after moving.
5. Test a harmless protected setting in a safe location away from a trusted place to confirm a biometric prompt appears. Avoid changing account credentials or disabling theft controls merely to test the mechanism.
6. Keep the phone's PIN private even at home. If you suspect someone learned it, change the PIN and review the account's trusted devices and recovery settings rather than trusting location-based protection alone.

If something goes wrong​

If the device says a location is trusted when it should not be, review location accuracy and the saved map pin. Google warns boundaries are approximate. If biometrics fail, use the device's official troubleshooting path before disabling the safeguard.

Know the limit​

A trusted place is not a guarantee that only you are present. Location can be imprecise or manipulated, and device support varies.
