Use Chrome Safety Check as a triage list, not a clean bill of health

Chrome Safety Check can flag compromised, reused or weak saved passwords, an outdated browser, risky extensions, abusive notifications and unused permissions. A green screen is useful, but it is not an antivirus scan or proof every account is safe. The value is in tracing each finding to the affected password, extension or site and confirming the fix. A broad 'Run a check' recommendation is less useful than a reproducible before-and-after record.

Before you start

Open Chrome on a trusted computer and confirm the correct browser profile. If it is a work profile, some settings may be admin-controlled. Have access to your password manager and the affected services directly. Do not paste passwords into any third-party 'checker' or use a link supplied by a fake virus alert.

Do it step by step

  1. Open Settings, Privacy and security, Go to Safety Check. Note each category that needs attention rather than clicking every suggested fix blindly.
  2. For an outdated Chrome version, use Chrome's own update flow and relaunch when prompted. Save unsent work first; a restart can end active sessions or forms.
  3. For a compromised or reused password, open the affected service from a known address, change it there, enable strong MFA and review sessions. Saving a new password in Chrome is not a substitute for changing the service's credential.
  4. For extensions, inspect publisher, purpose and permissions before removal. Remove unknown or unnecessary ones; if they return, investigate installed software or browser management.
  5. For abusive notifications or unused permissions, review the named sites. Remove a stale grant; restore a permission only if a trusted site actually needs it and you can verify the origin.
  6. Run Safety Check again and confirm the relevant warnings cleared. Keep a note of items that require an admin or a service-side account recovery, rather than treating them as resolved because you closed the panel.

Check the result

Each actionable finding has a documented resolution at its actual source, Chrome is current, and a repeat check no longer shows the same browser issue. Account recovery or admin-controlled tasks are tracked separately.

If something goes wrong

If a warning persists after a password change, verify that the correct saved entry and account were updated. If Chrome flags an extension you need for work, ask its owner or administrator. If a site permission reappears, check which profile is active and whether a policy or extension restored it.

Know the limit

Safety Check does not detect every malicious website, installed program or account takeover. Chrome may automatically revoke abusive notifications or unused permissions, but those actions cannot undo past disclosure. A compromised-password alert reflects known signals, not a guarantee that unflagged passwords are secret. Chrome Safety Check Google account security
