Use Firefox Strict tracking protection without exempting every site

Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks many cross-site trackers and scripts. Strict applies broader blocking than Standard and can disrupt sign-in widgets, embedded media or checkout flows. When one site breaks, changing the global setting back to Standard may be unnecessary. Diagnose the site, use a narrow exception only if needed, and review it later. Mozilla also has web-compatibility exceptions under some modes that can fix common breakage without abandoning protection.

Before you start​

Update Firefox and note the exact page and symptom. A site can fail because of an outage, extension, cookie state or its own code; a broken page is not automatic proof that tracking protection caused it. Keep a second browser available only as a comparison, not as a permanent way around a security warning.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Firefox Settings, Privacy & Security, and inspect Enhanced Tracking Protection. Choose Strict if you want its wider blocking and accept that some sites may need troubleshooting.
2. On a troublesome site, use the shield by the address bar to see whether protection is active and what was blocked. Reload once and test the exact failing action, such as sign-in or video playback.
3. Check Firefox's Advanced settings for web compatibility exceptions in Strict or Custom. Mozilla distinguishes major and minor site fixes; try the relevant built-in compatibility option before switching all protection off for the site.
4. If the problem persists, temporarily turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for only that verified site and reload. If it starts working, you have evidence of a protection conflict. If it still fails, restore the shield and look at extensions, cookies or site status instead.
5. If a site exception is necessary, keep it limited to the genuine domain and complete the task. Turn the site shield back on afterward if the feature works again, and report repeatable breakage to Mozilla or the site operator.
6. Review exceptions periodically in Firefox privacy settings. An old exception on a site that later changes ownership or content may allow more tracking than you intended.

Check the result​

Strict remains on globally, essential sites work, and any site-specific exception has a clear reason. You can reproduce the difference when toggling the protection for the affected site.

If something goes wrong​

If disabling the shield does not fix the problem, do not leave it off. Test a clean profile or extensions cautiously and clear only that site's data if appropriate. A work device may have browser policy that controls choices.

Know the limit​

Tracking protection reduces known tracking but does not make browsing anonymous or prove a site is safe. A site exception may allow all content, including trackers, to load on that site.
