Use Windows 11 Network reset only after saving VPN and virtual-switch settings

Network reset can help persistent connection problems after narrower checks fail, but Microsoft explicitly positions it as a last step. It removes installed network adapters and settings, reinstalls adapters after restart, and may require VPN client or Hyper-V virtual switch setup again. A home user can usually rebuild one Wi-Fi connection; a remote worker or developer may lose access to critical network resources. Write down the configuration first.

Before you start

Ensure you have Wi-Fi credentials, VPN setup instructions, any special static IP or DNS values and a local administrator sign-in. On a remotely administered PC, arrange hands-on access before disconnecting it. Back up relevant virtual-machine networking details. Perform ordinary checks—router, another device, ipconfig, DNS and proxy—first.

Do it step by step

  1. Reproduce the failure and compare a second device on the same network. If both fail, fix the upstream network instead of resetting only this PC.
  2. Run Windows 11's Get Help Network and Internet troubleshooter and record its result. Check for a targeted driver or settings issue; make one narrow change if evidence supports it.
  3. Record all adapter names and special configuration in Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings and your VPN application. Save official reinstallation media or account access for the VPN client.
  4. If the problem persists, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Read Windows' description and confirm you can rebuild the listed dependencies.
  5. Select Reset now and allow the planned restart. Reconnect to a trusted network, then restore VPN, static addressing or virtual switches only from known settings.
  6. Check internet, one local resource, VPN, virtual machines and the active Public/Private profile. Document what reset changed and which original symptom it resolved.

Check the result

The original connection works after reboot and all required VPN or virtual-network functions are restored. A changed network profile is identified rather than missed.

If something goes wrong

If reset fails to restore internet and the adapter is absent in Device Manager, investigate driver and hardware. If it disconnects a remote PC, you may need local intervention. A network reset does not repair a router outage or account authentication failure.

Know the limit

Microsoft warns that Network reset can remove settings and change profiles. It is deliberately a last resort, not a routine speed boost or privacy feature. Microsoft Wi-Fi troubleshooting Essential network settings

Decision checkpoint

Keep a paper or offline copy of the network details if the PC is the only device with access to the support portal. After reset, reconnect first, then rebuild one dependency at a time. If a VPN or virtual machine fails, identify whether its adapter, profile or credentials were removed before reinstalling unrelated software. Test a second normal restart to confirm the repaired configuration persists. A remote support session should be scheduled only when someone can physically reconnect the machine if the reset cuts off access. Keep a local copy of the recovery instructions.
