Verify Google Photos backup before freeing phone storage

Google Photos can remove device copies of media it considers backed up, freeing storage. That is useful only if the right account has the right photos in the cloud. A 'Backup complete' message alone does not tell you whether a particular folder or recent video is included.

Before you start​

Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and identify which Google Account is active in Photos. Keep irreplaceable originals on the phone until you have also checked an independent backup.

Do it step by step​

1. Open Google Photos and tap your profile photo. Confirm the account email and backup status, then inspect which device folders are selected for backup.
2. Choose several important photos and a recent long video. For each, open More → About or Details and check the Backed up status and size rather than relying only on a thumbnail icon.
3. From another device or browser, sign in to photos.google.com with the same account and open those exact examples. Check the resolution and content you need.
4. Only then choose Free up space on this device and read the amount and items Google proposes to remove locally. Understand that built-in gallery apps and offline viewing may no longer show the removed copies.
5. After the cleanup, revisit the cloud library and download one test item back to the phone if you need to know the recovery route. Keep a separate copy for unique family or work media.

Check the result​

The sample items should still open on photos.google.com after their device copies are removed. The phone should show more available storage, and you should know which account holds the media.

If something goes wrong​

If an item is missing on the web, stop the cleanup and investigate backup settings, storage limits or the selected Google Account. Do not empty Photos Trash while trying to recover a missing item.
