What it means
Version history restores an earlier state of a selected document. Restore your OneDrive rewinds a much broader set of actions across files and folders, within Microsoft's supported recovery period for eligible subscribers. For the whole-drive operation, files created after the selected restore point can move to the recycle bin. That is useful after mass damage but disruptive when only one file was overwritten.
A real-world example
A single spreadsheet has one bad edit; its version history is the narrow tool. Thousands of files were renamed by ransomware; a clean whole-drive restore point may be appropriate after affected devices are cleaned.
What to do
Choose the smallest recovery scope that solves the problem. Before a broad restore, note legitimate new files and ask collaborators to pause. Afterward, inspect the recycle bin and recover newer good work deliberately.
The distinction that matters
Neither option guarantees recovery after retention expires or permanent deletion. A restore point can be synchronized to other devices and may conflict with edits they hold. Keep separate backups, and treat malware cleanup as a prerequisite when the mass change came from an infected device. Check the recycle bin for legitimate files created after the restore point; restoring the whole drive may move those newer files there rather than preserve them in place.
