What it means
A device can continue displaying video or switching lights after its maker stops fixing vulnerabilities. Apps and cloud services may also outlive or outpace firmware support. To judge risk, identify the exact model, software version, vendor policy and whether remote access remains enabled.
A real-world example
A five-year-old indoor camera still streams video, but its manufacturer cannot confirm any future firmware updates. A working picture does not answer its security status.
What to do
Ask the vendor for the support window and latest version. Apply official updates, reduce remote exposure and replace high-impact unsupported devices when practical.
The distinction that matters
An update switch set to Auto does not promise that future updates will exist. A separate guest network can contain some consequences but does not patch the camera. The FTC advises checking update promises before buying and contacting the manufacturer when the policy is unclear.
