What the label means
WPA3 and
WPA2 are Wi-Fi security modes for the connection between a device and the access point. WPA3 is the newer choice when all devices support it; WPA2-AES remains a common compatible option. An open network offers no equivalent password-based local protection.
Example
A new router offers WPA3-only, WPA2/WPA3 mixed and an older compatibility mode. Test phones, laptops and smart devices before choosing a mode. If an old gadget cannot join WPA3-only, a separate guest or IoT network may be preferable to weakening the main network for everyone. The FTC's
home-camera guide recommends WPA3 or WPA2 for home Wi-Fi.
The boundary
An encrypted Wi-Fi link does not certify the sites you visit, remove malware or fix an unsupported router. Keep a strong Wi-Fi password, patch the router and continue checking login-page addresses. A fake hotspot can still choose a reassuring network name, so confirm the correct network before joining away from home.
