About ethic in AV companies

if you see it from another view you will see that they arenot work completely free:
  1. developers just don't add only to the opensource community but also gain (not funds only) but sharpen their skills more by seeing new coding ideas contributed by the other and fork for another projects (which make them avoid starting from scratch)
  2. opensource code eligible anyone (according to licence EULA) to redistribute the code which benefits you to embed it in another projects
  3. the founder also benefits if the project success it may produce enterprise (commericial) version with fees lower that intellectual one which make them more competitive (red hat Linux Distro) for example (by the aid of opensource community giving away fredora as reward
so it is mutual beneficial relations (a big example also for that is new Microsoft chromium Edge) which based on google chrome code base
Time represent a cost. why you re invent the bicycle again if you have all its components free to use :)

Not denying that there aren't any benefits, but it still remains the fact that when people hear open source, the first thing that comes to a lot of people's mind is the word free.

Ironically Linux development is quite backed up by Microsoft it is one of the biggest donator among others.

so of course, i laugh at those Linux fanboys hating MS while MS in fact is contributing heavily to the well-being of Linux.

It is quite funny and ironic TBH. The company they are hating on, is the one that is supporting them the most. Personally I don't think they even know anymore who they are competing with. I think they like to hate on MS, because that the cool thing to do. I still think they would be better off working together, rather than someone just going their own way and doing their own thing, which seems to be the norm with Linux.

Linux never became popular because the Linux community does not support:
1. The most widely-used software used in business (such as Microsoft Office)
2. A desktop system that panders and caters to helpless typical users (the user is actually expected to learn and do themselves)

Agreed,

To be fair, I never said it was the sole reason, I said it was one of the reasons which is true. Linux is way too diluted to even make sense of it all. Instead of working together, they all decide to do their own thing. Why is it that the first question that someone asks when switching to Linux is which distro do I use? There are many reasons as to why Linux never made it big time, but the fact that there are too many distros to count on two hands is a problem IMHO.

they hate for the same reason that anti-Google\Chrome\Chrome OS\Chromebook people hate here
privacy blah, blah, blah

there is an ideology behind FOSS also - no copyright - therefore Microsoft is the devil

Microsoft's Linux Foundation membership is questionable
it remains to be seen exactly what Microsoft is up to
many in FOSS argue, and rightly so, that Microsoft wants to shape Linux for its own ends
Microsoft has prove through its own actions whether it is really supporting Linux or just having another one of its corporate profit agendas

Steve Ballmer once called Linux a cancer
as it turns out the real societal cancers are Windows, Microsoft Office and Microsoft itself
it holds the world hostage

Well business is business that's what's this is all about. If it wasn't MS, it would be someone else. Playing devils advocate here, but to be brutally honest (not saying this is right by any means), it seems like MS is beating them at their own game. They want source code that anyone can use and redistribute, check, don't have to pay for the source code, check, etc.... FOSS wanted this utopia for software, it will never happen when business and money is involved. Like I said earlier, if it wasn't MS, it would be someone else. That's just how business works.

Actually, FOSS concentrates very little on the Microsoft's of the world nowadays. Sure, there are still ideological battles but for the most part FOSS has carved out a real niche for itself.

Anyway, I just find it more than a bit funny that an admitted software junkie (OP) is complaining that the price of licenses have been increased too high and therefore interfering with him from buying more software. Spoken like a true addict.

i dont know where you live but 10$ a year is very cheap, i live in a country where the average salary is 200$ a month, and people can afford to go coffee shop almost daily, 0.5$ a coffee...

There is nothing unethical, it is business, security vendors aren't charity. I was employed by Emsisoft, so i know very well how it functions so i could tell you the reasons but it is not me to do it.
i find amusing people want free security software while they are ready to spend 60+$ on a single video game or a Netflix subscription...

Did you consider:
1- salary increases, now even qualified Asian and Indian employees (used to be very cheap) cost almost the same as a starting western one.
2- the cost of software development, malware research, support, etc...
3- infrastructure costs (you all like cloud stuff, who pay the expensive monthly hosting data servers? Santa Claus?)
4- local taxes increases, governments are broke, they drain money as much as they can, never heard about "taxes for digital services companies"?

i can go on and on...

So do you expect with a free or cheap price a company will stay afloat? Look at Zemana, hundreds of free giveaway, result , they are almost bankrupt...their rep disappeared from MT as if he was abducted by some Aliens LOL

i can guess from your post, you are not business owner.

Yes. their product, their rules.
They set a price, up to you to follow or move on to another solution.
Will you complain and beg a restaurant owner to give you a discount if his prices doubles? i bet not, you will find another restaurant.

Anyway, if you don't pay with cash , you will pay in another way... nothing is free in this world.

For me it wasn't the money that Emsisoft was charging I felt let down by them because I was coming up to my 6th year if I renewed for another 3 years and they decided to remove the loyalty structure. This annoyed me some what because it was one of the few companies that was rewarding loyalty. While I understand business and need to make money and like I said it wasn't the price it was the fact you were getting rewarded for loyalty.

Consequently I haven't considered them for over a year now but might go back because I did like their product.

Linux is at the point today that even an old, crotchety, throwback like me can use it, perhaps not well but well enough for daily use. The problem, and why I'm still on Win 10 and not some Debian based Linux, is software. I have many hundreds of dollars invested in software that I need and use almost daily. Some of the most important programs are not available with Linux.

If I remember correctly, emisi had in the past been doing business to extend the license period for users who introduced their software to others. I think that it is effective to raise emisi's name recognition, but I think that it was a method that took too much time to be effective in terms of profit.

When you buy anything, not just software, it's important to compare the overall balance and pay.

You said a good reason to use Windows.
Otherwise, if you do not use some specific programs for your work or specific games, there is no reason not to use Linux. :)

I am on Linux (a little) and on Windows (a lot), why?

Linux = Torrenting and watching vids,
browsing the dark side.

Windows = MS Office, and for the reason im in this forum. Also, Linux isn't very fun when you are a security enthusiast. Lol.

sweetie, he was fired

and there is another popular software here that almost its entire user base on the forums is free beta licenses, otherwise no one would pay for it

sweeite Linux security is the real deal
you configure it all manually
from firewall to SELinux
real security enthusiasts use Linux
Linux people script and program instead of playing with softs as most people do here on Windows

Free product from Security company isn't charity. It is part of their marketing strategy. It is their business model. Security (av) company need money for their operation, employee salary etc so they need to sell something to earn something. I think if you want to use free antivirus, you should always searching and trying that kind of deal.
But you not alone mate, I remember when I'm still in collage I used to rely on freeware and sometimes shady (serial number, keygen etc) AV, but when I got graduated (and employed) I can feel how hard is it to earn money. So, right now one of reason why I'm purchasing almost of my software is because that action serve as sign of appreciation to it's creator.

In that situation one thing to make me angry is the companies downgrade products, make more expensive renew or remove free products, for me this is not ethical. I buy yearly a emsi licence include if i do not need to contribute to they project, but whitouth renewal discount i do not do anymore.
What if AV company says "now my product cost five times more expensive than a year ago"? Can we trust in this companies.
What if kaspersky remove ksc free or if avast make more expensive ?
Do you think this is ethical?

Downgrade may not be unethical but it's very bad for business. One of the nevers of business is, "Never take anything (or take anything back) from an existing customer." This means never do things such as remove a feature or a part of product during a recall. If the purchaser already owns the item, it must be fixed if there is an issue. Microsoft broke this rule in my opinion when they shut down gadgets in Windows Vista and 7. They said they could not be secured and look now at the apps in the latest versions of Bulldoze. And look at what their products have become...terrible imo. For me, it was so wrong and actually to the point of being unethical. Really wrong what they did there. They never batted an eye either...like a meth freak or something.

One thing a company can do is remove an existing discount program. This is not necessarily a bad business practice, although great pain should be made by the company to make sure they have earned the respect of their customers to the degree that the decision to remove the discount will not be punished.

With regard to pay v free, I feel the most important question at this time is, "Is the pay software worth the money?" I think Kaspersky products are worth the money. So, if KSC free has a few ads for its free users so be it. I don't believe Kaspersky will take down KSC though. That would be bad for business. If I had the money now, I would pay, however. I am actually very grateful to Kaspersky for KSC free. Really great program...

I'm dealing with a UK film production company. They're working with us on a short film. We're supposed to speak the same language, but I've found it isn't so. The producer had me change several references in the script where I mentioned 'sidewalk.' No one there knew what the word 'sidewalk' meant. These are Londoners. Maybe it's different in other places.

*edit* Not a clue about spotted dick. I've never heard of it, or the term.
