AV-Comparatives AV-Comparatives Performance Test - September 2024

Disclaimer
  1. This test shows how an antivirus behaves with certain threats, in a specific environment and under certain conditions.
We encourage you to compare these results with others and take informed decisions on what security products to use.
Before buying an antivirus you should consider factors such as price, ease of use, compatibility, and support. Installing a free trial version allows an antivirus to be tested in everyday use before purchase.

Thank you for sharing the Performance Test for September 2024 and the comparison chart. It will be helpful for users to make informed decisions about antivirus software.

The system they use is Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM and SSD system drives, they consider this high end, I would say average or less - I wouldn't consider any system with 8 Gig RAM High End - And why continue to use Windows 10 which is nearing the end of it's life - My basic experience recently with F-Secure doesn't cause particular slowdowns - All depends on your system.

I have also been using F-Secure for some time and have not noticed any slowdown of my PCs. The results from AV-Comparatives are a mystery to me.
the results are actually correct there are some things I think that we should consider:

A 10 percent slowdown in a file copy operation vs. a 3 percent slowdown can cause testers to consider a product slower than the average or other products. However, in the real world, this 7 percent difference does not show itself to the end user.

it seems the more CPU and faster SSD you have the antimalware solutions will be lighter so they use an average to low config PC to test. This difference is showing itself in AV-test performance tests. They use a low-end system and a high-end system if you see numbers that are different between these two.

as we tested this ranking is accurate and ESET and Kaspersky provide the most balanced protection. performance and protection and false positives etc all are balanced and thoughtfully designed and executed

the reason Mcafee is on top is that Mcafee scans the files on execution and not on access and it's heavily reliant on the cloud. which does not make it a balanced product.

That is because sometimes the "slowdowns" are in milliseconds (ms). Not even noticeable to the hooman.

The only antivirus that I have noticed slow downs reported by AV-C is Microsoft Defender. Inexplicably, sometimes it performs an analysis and brings installs or launching a program to a crawl. That includes Microsoft applications.

I agree with you and @bazang. Real world use on my end with F-Secure I haven't noticed this either (4 PC's). Including PC's with 8GB of RAM and one Windows 10 PC with a 4th generation Intel Core i3 cpu.

I guess if that were the case according to the chart, Bitdefender users would be a little miffed or wondering about that one, too?

The methodology and results are given here:

You can also test personally using software like GeekBench but the process is tedious, e.g., uninstall completely or restore a system backup, then test with the built-in AV several times, then repeat the process, install an AV to test, and test, etc.

In addition to what's already been said about this, antivirus performance can sometimes vary greatly from one computer to the next. I've seen cases where two computers with similar specs were running the same antivirus and is was causing noticeable slowdowns on one of the computers, but not on the other one. There have been plenty of times I agree with the results of performance tests and other times when I've had a very different experience to the published results of performance testing. I always try an antivirus for myself, to see how it performs on my PC, rather than taking too much notice of performance tests.

The problem is that uninstallation isn't always smooth, even with the uninstall tool provided. That means you have to backup, install, test several times, restore, and repeat.

what do you use now Roger? My fastest are K7 and McaFee.

I use Total Uninstaller to monitor the installation, so it can delete all the leftovers after uninstalling an antivirus.

historically I've used Revo (paid) but just looking at Total Uninstaller I see there's a Professional version and Essential version. Which do you use, & do you know difference between these two? just now seeing Comparison chart at bottom of the page, and there is also an Ultimate version... Is this the best uninstaller in your opinion?

I use the Pro version and based on my testing it is the best. It's not cheap though.
