AV-Comparatives Performance Test - April 2026

Disclaimer
  1. This test shows how an antivirus behaves with certain threats, in a specific environment and under certain conditions.
We encourage you to compare these results with others and take informed decisions on what security products to use.
Before buying an antivirus you should consider factors such as price, ease of use, compatibility, and support. Installing a free trial version allows an antivirus to be tested in everyday use before purchase.

Has anyone noticed that Gen has quietly dropped Avira from the last few tests. Interestingly, they did not drop AVG which is just a reskinned rebrand.

The Avira-based AVs don’t shine with exceptional performance.
I agree, F-Secure is still holding it's own at the back of the pack 😅 But, that really doesn't bother me in this regard, how many times am I archiving/unarchiving a file? And how many apps am I installing that on the first run it takes it a bit longer than the others? I do find that after an app update, it can and will at times load a little slower, as I believe the Avira scanning engine is now rescanning the app due to the update, after that, the performance isn't a problem. So in that regard, the Avira engine is not the most "efficient" engine out there, as well as with RunTime Defense, but the protection is still excellent, especially the online/banking protection.

When I saw K7 Total Security ranked 9th, I lost confidence in the test. Does Trend Micro have less impact on the system than K7? I don’t trust this test.
Point but one thing we all can concur that the British AV possessed a singular, unwavering ambition: to ensure that no other competitor would ever have to endure the indignity of finishing last.:ROFLMAO:

I find it fascinating that the Rsource impact is inversly proportional to the effectivness of the solution.

So basically: Not only are the less secure soltuions worse at detecting malware they also punish the user by being more process intensive.
Quite a loose correlation i'm afraid sophos did decently well in protection test but was worst here, but trend micro the worst protector is 4th fastest. There are other anomalies as well.

If this is the case, then Avira might be history sooner than later. I hope this is not the case as lots of AV rely on Avira Engine.

True true I should not pollute datapoints with my own personal bias. I am a bad scientist and should feel bad about it.

Trend Micro was doing well for itself in recent tests until it didn't. Goes to show, gotta enjoy those 15 minutes of fame.

That moment when Trend Micro manages to be lighter than Panda Antivirus :P
Trend Micro is written in Microsoft Visual C++ which Trend Micro for the latest version may have boosted to newer versions.

In addition, Trend Micro uses open source components which are known to be performance beasts such as Boost Framework and so on.

Trend Micro used to be heavy before because it did not use any caching whatsoever. Every file was scanned again and again.

Panda is written in outdated .bet frameworks.

Trend Micro is bound to be more efficient.

Nah, the fact that it works well is the reason it`s used alot and actually is in the results here under the name Fortect which might be why Gen Digital didn`t include it?
