Hi everyone,
Just wanted to chime in and share a bit of my own backup journey. My very first backup software was Acronis, but I eventually found the annual release cycle and subscription costs a bit too pricey for me. Later, a local distributor introduced ActiveImage Protector (AIP) 2022 here, priced around $30-something. I’ve been using it since 2022, and I haven't encountered any extra fees or subscription charges so far.
I noticed a lot of people in various forums searching for alternatives to Macrium Reflect Free. That got me thinking, and while chatting with an AI, it mentioned that AIP might eventually shift to a subscription model similar to Acronis in the future. That made me look around, and I recently found BigMind DR on StackSocial under their Backup & Storage deals. I know a lot of people have concerns or mixed feelings about BigMind DR. After testing it out myself, I realized I’m not really a fan of this kind of SaaS-based backup approach either. When I asked the AI about it, it told me that cloud-managed SaaS is becoming an industry trend. But personally, I really don't want my backups to require an internet connection or force me to use a web dashboard just to manage them.
On another note, while tools like AOMEI are quite popular, due to regional and geopolitical concerns—especially given where we are—many users here tend to avoid certain tools with mainland backgrounds. (Tools like Clonezilla were actually developed here in Taiwan, though it's more of an open-source project created by the NCHC rather than something officially pushed or promoted by the government). I probably shouldn't dive too deep into that geopolitical side of things, or this post might need to be moved to the Member Chat section!
For now, I'm still patiently waiting to see if AIP will release a newer version down the road. If any of you happen to know of other affordable, reliable, and privacy-respecting backup solutions, I would genuinely appreciate it if you could share your recommendations.
Thanks for reading, and cheers!
