I was "working" on astronomy hobby with chatGPT, mostly python running skyfield, and after 8pm (and after chatting several hours on & off) definitely got the impression that chatGPT wanted to end it for day -- like it's programmer or Sam Altman told it hey this guy has used his $20/mo allotment today, nudge him offline. Has anyone else noticed that. I guess there's a limit to $20/mo chat time, although I haven't really noticed (or looked for) a cap.

Rate limits & soft throttling.

Paid plans don’t give “unlimited compute”. There are message caps, tool caps, and burst limits, when you approach them, responses may get shorter, avoid heavy computation, suggest stopping or simplifying, be slower or less “engaged”. This is automatic infrastructure behavior, not intent.

Tool limits "especially Python / Skyfield".

Python tools are much more expensive than plain chat. Common effects are fewer or simpler computations, hesitation to run code, suggestions to “conceptually explain” instead of execute ECT.

This often kicks in after sustained technical sessions, especially in the evening when global load is higher.

⏱️ Free ChatGPT (GPT-5.2) limit

  • You can send about 10 messages every 5 hours to GPT-5.2
  • After you hit that, ChatGPT automatically switches to a smaller “mini” model until the reset
  • When the 5-hour window passes, the full model unlocks again

So you can still chat — just with a less powerful AI temporarily.
